Mission

PoliCom (POLItecnico Comunicazioni Ottiche Milano) is a center of the Electronics and Information Department (DEI) of the Politecnico di Milano jointly operated by personnel by the Politecnico di Milano and Fondazione Politecnico di Milano.
PoliCom was born to coordinate the resources of the Department in the area of Photonics and Optical Communications.
PoliCom was born in continuity with the former CoreCom, the Consortium between Politecnico di Milano and Pirelli Cable (born in the 1996) that ended its activities in the 2008. PoliCom hereditates the CoreCom Labs and part of his research staff.
PoliCom is directed by prof. Mario Martinelli, the former director of CoreCom.

PoliCom is located in the Milan district, the national location with the higher concentration of Photonics Industries. In particular PGT Photonics and Alcatel-Lucent are the main founders of PoliCom which operates also with other important entities of the North-Italy area.

PoliCom stimulates and participates to National and International Research projects in cooperation with Universities, the National Research Council and other Research Entities.

PoliCom activities range in the most advanced domain of the photonics and optical communications: 100Gb/s transmission; WDM-PON; Slow-wave; Plasmonics; Polarization Mastering; Silicon Optics; etc

Policom, Department and University

PoliCom, as center of Electronics and Information Department, is born with the aim of develop coordination and synergy first of all with the resources of the Department and of the University.
Inside the Department, PoliCom is one of the Labs of the Telecommunication Section and makes use of the collaboration of several professors and researchers of the Section. Are or have been engaged in the research activities of PoliCom, with different levels of collaboration and responsability:
Pierpaolo Boffi, Andrea Melloni (both also part of the Research Group "Optical Communications"), Arnaldo Spalvieri, Maurizio Magarini, Carlo Capsoni, Guido Gentili, Guido Maier, Achille Pattavina, Stefano Tubaro.
At University level, PoliCom has and had several collaborations with different Departments. In particular with Department of Mathematics (numerical modelling of nanophotonics devices); Department of Physics (material growth by MOCVD); Department of Energy (sputtering and rapid thermal annealing technologies, RAMAN characterizations); Department of Mechanics (development and test of fiber optic sensors); etc.

Labs Organization

PoliCom is a Center devoted to both theoretical and experimental activities in the field of the Photonics with particular attention to the Optical Communications. To this aim, PoliCom is organized in four Labs:

Optical Communications Systems Lab (Head: PhD. Lucia Marazzi) aimed to the experimentation and development of new solution for the WDM network;

Integrated Optics Lab (Head: PhD. Francesco Morichetti) aimed to design and experiment new devices based on integrated-optics circuits;

Fiber-Optics and Optical Fiber Sensors Lab (Head: PhD. Maddalena Ferrario) aimed to study and to develop new fibers and new sensor fiber-optic based;

Optical Technologies Labs (Head: PhD. Silvia Pietralunga) aimed to study and to experiment new materials, devices and phenomena in the photonics as well as in the electromagnetic domain.
